Expectations can act like barriers or stepping stones. Whether it is our fitness journey, employment, or just waiting for a special person to take notice of you; what we expect and what we actually receive are way too often and way too distant from one another. We tend to allow our expectations to automate our responses and actions, leaving everything we do at the mercy of a result rather than the process. The outcome you desire is one thing, but trying to force it and allowing yourself to be overrun with negative thoughts and feelings of inadequacy when it doesn’t work out, is another. This notion of fulfilled expectations bringing happiness is not always and will not always be the case. But, understanding what fulfilled expectations and how you achieved them to secure your happiness is definitely necessary in building positive emotional foundations. Allow joy in trusting the process and taking necessary steps in fulfilling your expectations. Sometimes we fall short of giving ourselves good reasons for expecting good results. Good reasons come in small steps, taken systematically to add validation to our realistic expectations. Step by step, without expectations, without a timeline, we can cherish each small victory.
