Scars are carried by all of us. They are gentle reminders of the pain once witnessed or
poor decisions once made. Whether it is a gash from the age of adolescence, a
fracture from the college years or a surgical repair during the autumn of your life, they
carry themselves as proof that we, in the face of either emotional, physical or mental
despair, continue subsistence. Scars can carry the recollections of tales slightly
embellished to make one seem almost invincible. But scars can exist on the inside
As well. Scars can carry such reminders of the fragility of life and relationships,
Pilfering through our senses of self-worth, allowing the past to devalue the present and
future. The scars of emotion tend to remain more of a wound, a wound that we
repeatedly defend with an unapologetic absence of clarity. The effects of such scars
place us in a shell that offers us false protection, only to lash out during times of
insecurity to defend our self-imposed victimization of these scars. We must remember
that, although the wounds will leave a mark, scars are a sign of healing - healing that
will build scar tissue and has the ability to strengthen over time. Celebrate your scars and do not fear their
appearance. You are not your scars. Scars reveal the bravery you possess and the courage you held on to during your difficult times, times that did not break you and only
served to make you stronger. Our scars are unique to us, they are the beautiful
badges that remind us of the challenges we have conquered and the strength to heal
from wounds not yet inflicted.
You are not your scars.
